Not sure if anyone will like this idea, but what about using --no-mapfile, but only to bypass a warning with a pause that just requires pressing enter to continue? Something like:

WARING! You are not using a mapfile, so you will not be able to resume the recovery.
Press ENTER to continue, or CTRL-C to exit and modify your command.

Having the --no-mapfile works for scripting, novice users will (hopefully) see the warning, and experienced users only have one extra key press if they forget or are too lazy to type it out.
