I had the same problem with gcc 2.95.2 and gdb 4.18 on alpha OSF4.0E:
The problem can be solved if the debugging option `-gcoff' is used.
If I compile with `-gstabs' the problem is the same as with just `-g'
(I'm no more sure if I configured gcc using `--with-stabs', so I do not
know what is the default output format.)
