It's a good viewpoint.

I noticed another viewpoint by your examples.
When processed by some programs, plain space might be more suitable.
Some programs may consider "-- Lost" or "--- past end of file ---"
is part of source code.

Thus, I would like to take plain space.
As you said, this is also intuitive enough.
