Could this be it ?
I fired up gnubg-cli  and it says
CRITICAL  This ...was compiled with SSE support but this machine does not 
support SSE.....

It has an AMD chip  my other computers have Intel.

On a seperate note out of interest I set up a new user account and tried to 
install gnubg but it crashed.
