prior to using the InstallGNUstep script, I tried to install every piece on its own:

installing gnustep-make

No, it did see ffcall, but you have an old objective-C library. That's why it fails. I don't know why InstallGNUstep did not install a new objc library. I'll have to check that. But you could install it yourself and everything else should work after that.
