I would consider this an unacceptable solution to the problem.   Any fix would should be in the form of allowing GNUstep to read the XML without modification.

I'm not involved with this, so I may add only a single cent.

Depending on the nature of the problem, did you consider doing this  
scan at compile time? Maybe the illegal characters can be replaced  
with legal ones, still preserving Mac OS X compatibility.
