Follow-up Comment #2, bug #21273 (project gnustep):
For me, the box does update with the new information, it is just that I have
to blindly navigate the menu. I don't know if this helps, but cairo-glitz
(which still has manifold problems for me) does not black out the menu, and
does update the box.
