Any meta string will break compatibility too, of patterns that used the
meta string.  I think the only thing to do is add an option like
--match-newlines-in-pattern.  Which sounds like an incredible headache,
grep being so strongly line-oriented.  So maybe grep is not the right
place to test newlines in patterns ...
