My objection was overstated--I hadn't looked at the patch yet (shame on me). 
It safely aliased the internal implementation of the request, which is
otherwise irretrievably discarded on redefinition.

However, having to do a dance where you call the "I really mean it" aliased
version of the request is also pretty squicky.

Yes.  I've updated #57556 with some concrete info about what exactly needs to
be supported.
