Maybe Deri can help me out here.
Is the _reason_ it doesn't work because the AFM files are missing? I
don't see anything in our "PROBLEMS" file (which distributors generally
don't ship even though they should :-/ ) or in the grops(1) or gropdf(1)
man pages. (We _do_ cover the fact that AFM files are necessary to
generate groff font description files--but we already have those for the
Base 35 PostScript Level 2 fonts.)
If that's not the problem, them I'm not clear on what the problem is.

That may be, but I don't yet understand what it is Arch is failing to
do. If we can articulate that, maybe someone at Arch will be inclined
to fix it.
