Follow-up Comment #6, bug #66977 (group groff):

To clarify my position: none of the roff cognoscenti of 2015 opined that the
lack of such a warning was a defect (see comment #1), which led me to conclude
roff veterans would be surprised by it appearing.  (If it's part of a warning
category that's off by default, that could mitigate this surprise.)

Other users have requested this warning (see comment #3)--most of them,
tellingly, not grizzled roff veterans.  So perhaps the tide is turning.

The thread cited in comment #1 shows ways to provoke such a warning without
changing groff.  So it's worth asking whether the formatter should be taking
on this role.  Also, the thread (which I started) initially asked about the
concept of a horizontal trap, which may be a more flexible way to solve the
problem.
