I realized a while ago, but I see that I never posted, that this isn't a case
of the problem going away, but only being obscured because by default, two
word spaces have a horizontal width equal to a word space followed by an
additional sentence space.  Add, for instance, an ".ss 12 6" to the top of
alternate.roff to show that the problem is still there.
