The input line
input_special=$(printf "\\\\X'pdf: \\\\\\\\[u007E]\n")
is missing a "'" at the end of "E]".
"test-groff -ww ..." shows a warning:
missing closing delimiter in device extension escape sequence; expected
character "'", got a newline
