I have tried doing this in the past myself and I don't think it's a good idea.
It would be fairly difficult to match its style and line thickness to the font
being used. I suggest you take a look at how neateqn solves this. There is a
sample of its rendering of square roots of different sizes on the last page of
https://dev.rudi.ir/neateqn.pdf.
