looks reasonable to code inspection and appears to works in casual testing
(without installation):


 $ ./mmroff /root/xxx
mmroff: fatal error: "groff -rRef=1 -z -mm /root/xxx" exited with status 1024


Needless to say, the meaning of the very helpful message "exited with status
1024" will be obvious to any user familiar with the *status argument of the
wait(2) system call and with the WEXITSTATUS() macro defined in <sys/wait.h>:
groff(1) called exit(1), did not die from a signal, and produced no core(5)
dump.  Clear, obvious, and simple - right?  =8-D
