  Now I agree. But don't forget that just a cpu type is not enough for
boot loaders; BIOS specifications are different among different
architectures that have the same cpu. Do you know grub98? It is a grub
clone that supports NEC PC98x1 series and the clones. The computers are
shipped with Intel x86 cpus, but very different from IBM PC and the
clones, so the original grub can't be used for them. Perhaps
$(datadir)/grub/$(cpu)-$(vendor) should be used.

  By the way, automake-1.4 complains, "EXTRA_DATA should not be
defined". I think this is a bug about automake, because I can't
understand why EXTRA_DATA should not be defined. Have you already
reported this to automake maintainers? If not, I'll do.
