PXE is a network boot initiative from Intel & now supported by a few of the
major manufacturers like 3Com. See
http://developer.intel.com/ial/wfm/tools/index.htm for more details.

Basically though, it's a more modern and standardised replacement for
traditional network booting methods. Instead of using bootp, it uses DHCP.
It queries the DHCP server for it's IP address and details of a tftp server.
It then loads a second stage boot loader from the tftp server. This second
stage loader is responsible for booting the operating system or whatever you
want to do. Intel don' t supply a second stage loader, but leave it up to
the user to supply.

Like I said before, it would be cool if grub could be loaded over the
network using this method. I presume the PXE bootrom could provide grub with
details of it's IP and tftp servers.

That MTD stuff looks ideal for another project I've got on at the moment.
I'll keep my eye on that.
