Subject: grub: should have way to install modified stage1.5 -and- stage2
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 10:52:23 -0400
From: Zack Weinberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Package: grub
Version: 0.5.91
Severity: wishlist
In complicated multiple-boot configurations, it would be nice to have
the ability to rewrite the hardcoded configuration of both stage1.5
and stage2 at installation time. For example: I have several
operating systems coexisting on a large disk. I place all their
kernels, stage2, and menu.lst on a separate partition at the beginning
of the disk, to avoid problems with BIOS disk-access limits. I want
to put stage1 in the MBR and stage1.5 in the unused area of cylinder
0. stage1.5 should look for (hd0,1)/stage2 and stage2 should look for
(hd0,1)/menu.lst. Setting this up involves modifying all three
stages' hardcoded configuration, which cannot be done with an install=
command.
stage2 fits in the unused area of cylinder 0, so you can just do it
that way, but then you lose the advantages of having a stage1.5.
