I had some problems too (similar) on a PC with EIDE Hard disk and a
SCSI-Controller --- and I haven't got that problem with the previous
version of grub.
... but I realized that the difference was not "pure", because the
/usr/local, under which I compile the GRUB is a NFS directory, and the
previous version was not _compiled_ on the same PC.
BTW, I found that the version which succeeded was conforming with the
requisits for both gcc and binutils, while the one which failed was not
(indeed, I was using, IIRC, a 2.7.x gcc and a version of binutils out of
age). So perhaps check the version of the utils you are using to compile
(there are important notes in the INSTALL file).
