slowdown after grub install

Hello I have a windows ME system (config below) that significantly slowed down once grub was installed.  Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Windows comes up as DOS inside grub is this correct?     Athlon 700mHz 64 MB RAM 20 GIG IDE HD WINDOWS ME Mandrake 7.1     Steps I took:   1: installed windows 2: tested windows (works fine) 3 installed mandrake 4 tested windows (runs slow)     Thanks for any tips or suggestions   -ed-
