I don't think FAQ 11 is relevent. That FAQ concerns having distinct "/"
and "/boot" partitions, which I do not have. Furthermore, the problems
I am seeing concern basic detection of drives and partitions. The
situation addressed by FAQ 11 would not come up until later, when GRUB
is looking for specific files in a selected partition. I cannot even
select a partition at all. My drives are clearly being misdetected, and
a command like "root (hd0,0)" simply hangs the machine outright.
I appreciate the suggestion, but something else is going on here.
