Understood.  I am a programmer, but GRUB is rather low level relative to
my expertise.  I know almost nothing about BIOS code, hard drive
partitions, and such.  If someone with more knowledge in that area
wanted to help, I would be happy to run test programs, report back
results from obscure debugging commands, and such.  I've tried to give
what details I can, but at this point I just don't know what to be
looking for.
