Well, reading this I thought "Hell, that might be!" first. But, if BIOS does not jump to the MBR of this disk, the BIOS should say "INSERT BOOT OR SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY" or so. Or not? In spite of that I will investigate the BIOS for another boot sequence or whatsoever. Also I will have to test, if lilo can boot...
