Could you try debugging the issue using gdb instead? strace, while a
nice tool, is not very useful for debugging.

it appears as if my last post of January last remained unanswered...
Every now and then I'm trying the new version
(inetutils-inetd_2%3a1.6-3_i386.deb) but still get the same error.
I took a 'strace' of both versions which might help detect where the
error comes from and I would be happy to send them on request.
