in my case there seems to be a direct connection between the ties and
phrasing slurs.
i've just installed lilypond-2.10.2-1.
this bug has not yet been fixed.
I found the link - and related - below unhelpful as the info was way too
technical for me.
this problem did not exist in lilypond-2.6.5
