the current behaviour of lilypond is just fine (I had a different
opinion previously).
I'm not sure. I think I'd prefer that Lilypond put rests closer to the
middle of the staff, and force them outwards if necessary, rather than
the reverse. Certainly this is the practice I use in much of my Finale
engraving; it seems to better duplicate the look of the good commercial
editions I've seen.
