Or, in the 3/8- or 6/8- time rhythmic form "e8. e16 e e", one reasons that the 1/16th notes belong logically to what comes after, and not the 1/8th note, and this is what the beaming is supposed to express. Then one might have some "virtual slurs", that are not typeset, but only affects the beaming.
