The list version has one major benefit: it's considerably faster.
Which seems to back up my conjecture that deducing the optimal chunk sizes seems hard (cf. comment 7)... Does the current (restored old) page-breaking algorithm do something more clever than a simple brute-force search over all "chunks" between the \pageBreaks?
