I can't agree with Carl's comment since it would rule out using 4. altogether in 3/4 rhythm, and rule out using something like 4.. pretty much altogether. Which I consider absurd. Even in the most tiresome modern practice, this sort of tie notation tends to get used only if the note _start_ is off-beat, but not if the note is merely prolonged to reach into the next beat.
