To pass the time until release-dependent patches get in, I commit this
beast. No comments except for the (announced) blockage on 2001, and 30+
hours of countdown.
I am aware of a definite shortage of documentation and announcements, but
since there is a bunch of related commits still outstanding, I prefer
delaying until I have a consistent whole. I'll catch up before next stable
for sure.
