Patchy now shows no changes in output. This would be a candidate for
merging, so be sure to give it a serious beating with your own files using
q, and read the docs in order to be able to comment on the user interface
and its documentation.
There are some minor documentation changes in here not logically belonging
to this patch (that just hit my eye when proofreading the docs for passages
that needed changing), but unless this patch is actually rejected, it does
not seem worth the trouble to sort them into a separate commit.
