Ah, thank you. I didn't know that. I see why it's a tricky situation. I guess 
that means my current workaround isn't so bad after all:

g8 \strumE d,8 \strumE |
% Something weird with the strum to the grace note.
\once \override NoteHead #'font-size = #-2 \slashedGrace a'16( b8)
