Follow-up Comment #13, bug #65533 (group make): I have a feeling that it might be related to the directory cache fix that was implemented:

When I look at the output of the make -d on 4.3 and 4.4, I notice that 4.4
outputs a TON of lines that say:
> Directory <path> cache invalidated (count <X> != command <Y>)
I examined the output of the log when running 4.4 make and didn't find any
instance of "recursive" or "recursively expanding".
Could this be related to the directory cache being invalidated many times the
directory cache gets invalidated? I counted 3,770,363 occurrences of
'^Directory .+ cache invalidated' in the file.
