I was interested in producing a 'date' output similar to:
Wed Mar 1 10:05:48 2000
where the day of the month is not padded with spaces.
So I saw in the 'date' manpage:
`-' (hyphen) do not pad the field `_' (underscore)
              pad the field with spaces
So I typed the following:

[jehsom@nullity ~]$ date +"%a %b %-e %H:%M:%S %Y"
Wed Mar 1 10:06:34 2000

Hm. still space padded. No difference either of the other ways:

[jehsom@nullity ~]$ date +"%a %b %_e %H:%M:%S %Y"
Wed Mar 1 10:08:50 2000
[jehsom@nullity ~]$ date +"%a %b %e %H:%M:%S %Y"
Wed Mar 1 10:08:54 2000

Is this a bug?

FYI:
[jehsom@nullity ~]$ date --version
date (GNU sh-utils) 2.0
