Bug in expr?

Hi,
I am running Linux 2.4 on a Dell Edge Server.

I am writing a script and appear completely unable to employ expr.

It works for plus but for no other operators. I need *.

I have set my keyboard to Dell + English UK.

I am in despair!!!
