I'm surprised that this syntax ever worked. It doesn't work in the oldest version of GNU tar that I can easily scare up (tar 1.15.1) and it doesn't work in Solaris 10 tar. Are you sure that it worked before, with exactly that spelling? What version of tar were you using? Put a space between the "f" and the "-" and it should work.
