Ah, thanks, that's news to me. Although, with my lawyer hat on, the file names in question all have backslashes, so SUSv2 says that they are not portable across implementations because they are not restricted to the portable filename character set. Still, one should be able to create and extract from tar archives on systems that support backslashes in file names, so in that sense tar's behavior does seem to contradict SUSv2. We'll address this issue again, after the next release comes out.
