Not sure which commits you're thinking of, but of my four recent commits in 
this area, commits e5aeda0699346384fafa5fea67d8635818c4afc3 and 
0713d3502a0717347a0af62c3afd61e537b4bcc7 are indeed just cleanups and 
optimizations, including some elimination of syscalls. Commits 
961e48a903f610c559a58ffdc3a8285983993365 and 
94391c4bf180062345ae0ce816f69f1c971d3969 change behavior; the former along the 
line that Claude originally hinted at (though its hint wasted my time; I made 
better progress when I ignored it), and the latter imposes a safety/sanity 
restriction that Claude did not hint at.
