Yes, it's true.  Automake didn't support anything else at one point.

    makes automake (correctly) bail out with an error when processing
    Makefile.am templates.  The attached patch is a simple and hopefully
    obvious fix.  Tested against automake 1.4.

Automake 1.4 doesn't fail for me, strange.  Anyway, thanks for the fix.
