1) I started texinfo: info
    2) then typed ^S ifs ( I just wanted to find node ifstream )

    That it! 
    segmentation fault.

    Note: if I start info with C locale (export LANG=C;info), all is OK, but
    in my "native" ru_RU.UTF-8 info segfaults.

So presumably this is due to something in the Russian translation
strings.  

I tried
  export LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8; info
but did not get the crash, so I'm afraid there's not much I can do myself.
I'm cc-ing Oleg who created ru.po, hopefully he can help track this
down.

    P.S. I have Debian GNU/Linux "sid" 

What is sid?
