But does it actually produce accented e's in the output?  I can't see
why it would, I've never yet set up active characters or different fonts
to handle those 8-bit chars.  I've seen and been sent a lot of different
patches for related aspects, but none really solve the general problem :(.

That is a new one on me.  I thought 8-bits should be ok as far as xref
went, although I don't think it's a real solution.

Unfortunately I'm taking off for a week.  Maybe Stepan will have a
chance to look at it in the meantime.
