I'm sorry; it was all a misunderstanding caused by my reluctance to install the newest version of such important tools as GNU Make. I'd been using, both on the SGI and the Linux machine, versions of GNU Make that were a bit dinosaurish. I built and installed GNU Make 3.80 and that fixed the problem so that I can now report that both Textutils-2.1 and Coreutils-4.5.9 compile without any hiccups (on both the SGI and the Linux box).
