Ok, I understood the following:

/subject/index is a PHP script, configured similar as:

<Files index>
  ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</Files>

?
But how can /subject/index/999/ then be a directory?
Or other way 'round, if /subject/index/999/ is a directory, where's your script?

Sorry, there must be something that I'm missing. Can you clarify it a bit?
