apache (prefork, ssl) hangs after some hours of running

  I am going to hazard a guess that you are having serious mutex problems.

  You should try an alternative AcceptMutex mechanism.  You should also
  choose another SSLMutex mechanism, which were introduced in Apache 2.0.45.

  Presuming it's the mutexes that are biting you (probable if the cpu load
  doesn't ramp significantly) there were several bug fixes over the past few
  releases.  Please retest with 2.0.45 and report back if you still lock up
  after trying at least two different mutex mechansims for both SSLMutex and
  AcceptMutex.

  If you would document which mutex causes you to fail and your exact kernel,
  we may be able to do some autoconf magic to choose an alternate default.
