RewriteRule problem when the URI is the same as the document root

Summary: RewriteRule problem when the URI is the same as the
                    document root
           Product: Apache httpd-1.3
           Version: 1.3.28
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows NT/2K
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Enhancement
          Priority: Other
         Component: mod_rewrite
        AssignedTo: [email protected]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi there,
let's suppose I have this inside my httpd.conf:

...
<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
    DocumentRoot /www/htdocs
    ServerName example.com
    ServerAlias www.example.com
    ErrorLog /www/logs/error_log
    CustomLog /www/logs/access_log common

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^/something/from/?$ /www/htdocs/index.php [L]
</VirtualHost>
...

That's work fine, but if I have this directory:
/www/htdocs/www/htdocs/index.php
a request for example.com/something/from
will be redirected internally to /www/htdocs/index.php
and not
/www/htdocs/www/htdocs/index.php

In pratice if I have a subdirectory path that is the same as my document root,
the redirection is not working fine...in my opinion obviously.

BTW,
    RewriteRule ^/something/from/?$ /index.php [L]
will call /www/htdocs/index.php which is fine.

Hope it was clear :-).

Thank you,
Andrea Rossignoli
