It does a poll on the backend socket with 10ms timeout to find out if more data is present or not. If no more data is present it adds a flush bucket to the brigade before passing it up the filter chain. This should reduce unnecessary flushes to the client a lot. On the other side intentional flushes on Tomcat side should have a fair chance of getting noticed and flushed to the client with only minor delay. Please test.
