Given setup:
RHEL 6.5 httpd-2.2.15-29.el6_4.x86_64
The several home directories will be mounted on demand by autofs
# service httpd start
will look into every home directory as listed by "getent passwd".
Result: All (thousands of) home directories are mounted - affects server and
network performance
Same behavior without "mod_userdir"
Not seen on RHEL5 (httpd-2.2.3-31.el5)
