on the power section in the BIOS for this (being the i386 since you 
replied to that one) there is no option to disable ACPI.  one can 
only choose the action taken by acpi, i think S1, S3, Stay Off.

the amd64 is different. i'll reply to that one separately to 
keep the PR numbers straight.
