The current situation isn't perfect, but at least I can live with it, or have figured out how to cope. Slamming outputs.master=255 would be way worse than the current situation. There are sounds, like the beep made when suspending and resuming, that do not go through sndiod. Maxing out the hardware volume is not a viable option.
