This is very pronounced. Firefox immediately spiked to almost 300% CPU on my four-core CPU and become non-responsive. I'm on Landry's Firefox 43 beta.
I haven't had issues with .mkv videos in VLC, though. Which encodings are giving you trouble? I don't have time for more debugging at the moment. My dmesg is substituted below.
